What are Whitelists and Blacklists?
While the VailNet
MailFilter will attempt to determine if a particular email is Spam
or not, you can assist the MailFilter by creating your own Whitelists
and Blacklists. A “Whitelist” is a list of email addresses
or domain names that you believe will never send you any Spam (and
as a result which you would prefer never be considered to be Spam).
Likewise a “Blacklist” is a list of email addresses
or domain names that you believe are 100% Spam (eg: emails from
weightloss@lose-weight-fast.com). While you do not need to have
a Whitelist or a Blacklist to use VailNet’s MailFilter, subscribers
can use these lists to try and define emails that they “know”
are not spam (whitelisted addresses) or “know” to be
spam (blacklisted addresses). If you wish to define known good (non-spam)
Whitelisted addresses or known bad (spam) Blacklisted addresses
you can use the Preferences module to populate these lists for your
email @vail.net, @colorado.net or @mountainmax.net.
How to Whitelist (allow) or Blacklist (deny) email addresses
or domains.
After logging
in to the Email Filter, click on the Preferences tab and then
click on the Whitelist/Blacklist subcategory. To whitelist or blacklist
a message, enter in either a specific email address or an entire
domain.
Examples:
Allowing messages: If
you want to receive email from someone whose emails are apparently
being blocked “goodguy@gooddomain.com”, enter that specific
email address in the Allowed (whitelist) field and click the Add
button.
Blocking messages::
If you do not want to receive email from “badperson@baddomain.com
,” enter that specific email address in the Blocked (Blacklist)
field and click the Add button.
Removing entries:
To remove entries, simply click on the trash-can icon next to an
entry.

How to Configure Your Quarantine Settings
After
logging in to the Email Filter, click on the Preferences tab then
click on the Quarantine Settings
subcategory.
Configuration Options
No messages in Quarantine: If you do not want any messages
sent to your Quarantine, choose the “No” option under
the Quarantine Enable/Disable section. Choosing this option causes
questionable messages to go directly to your Mailbox. However, these
messages will be tagged as: ******SPAM*****.
Notification interval:
You can change the interval at which you are notified about quarantined
messages. Choose to be notified each day, once per week, or not
at all. Change the Notification Address if you would like Quarantine
notifications to go to a different email address.
Default language:
If desired, you can also change the default language for the quarantine
message under the Default Language area.

How to personalize your spam settings.
After
logging in to the Email Filter, click on the Preferences tab then
click on the Spam Settings subcategory.
Configuration Options
Spam Filter: If you would like to disable
Email Filtering and receive every email message sent to you, choose
“No” under the Spam Filter Enable/Disable section.
Spam Scoring: One of the powerful ways the
Mail Filter manages your spam is through the use of scores for each
message. To find out more about scores, read about them in our Email Filtering
section. To create your own settings for spam scoring, first select
“No” next to Use System Default . Then choose the individual
thresholds you would like to use.
Tag Score is the score at which we will
add the tag *****SPAM***** to the subject line but still deliver
the message to your Mailbox.
Quarantine Score is the score at which the message
will go to your Spam Quarantine Inbox . Setting this to 10 means
a message will never go to your Quarantine Inbox based on its Spam
Score.
Block Score is the score at which the message
will be blocked entirely. Setting this to 10 means a message will
never be blocked based on its Spam Score.
For example:
If
you set the Tag Score to 4, Quarantine Score to 6, and Block score
to 8 then:
A message with a Spam Score of less than
4 will be delivered to untouched to you regular Inbox
A message with a Spam Score of 4 to 5.9
will be tagged as Spam
A message with a Spam Score of 6 to 7.9
will be delivered to your Quarantine Inbox
A message with a Spam Score of 8 and higher
will be blocked
Note: You must change the actual number next to the scale indicator
as the sliders cannot be moved.
You now have more control over
spam messages by customizing and personalizing the "Mail Filter".
Next, if you use Outlook you can add a plug-in that allows you to
manage messages from your Inbox. To find out how, click the following
