Mail Quotas
What is a mail quota?
A mail quota is the amount of space reserved on the server to house
your email messages. You can think of it as the size of your post
office box. The VailNet / ColoradoNet mail quota is 50 Megabytes;
this is roughly equivalent to 15000 single page email messages.
What causes a mailbox to become over quota?
When checking email:
Not removing messages from the mail server. Recieving lots of large
emails or emials with large attachments. Not check or picking up
emails for a long period of time.
Reasons for your box to exceed the quota include:
Email attachments:
Large email attachments may lead to a mailbox exceeding the quota.
Generally speaking, email messages without attachments are less
than 10 Kilobytes; however, an attached image, program file, or
multimedia file can sometimes be larger than 5 Megabytes! See Email
Attachments for more information.
Copies of messages are left on server:
If you have configured your email program to leave a copy of your
email messages on VailNet's server, your mailbox can quickly become
over quota. Click here for instructions
on how to check your email settings to be sure you do not have this
option selected.
What happens when
my mailbox is over quota?
If your mailbox exceeds the quota, meaning there is no room for
any additional mail in our mailbox on VailNet's server. All new
messages will bounce back to the sender. This is a lot like a P.O.
Box that is so "stuffed" with letters that there is no
room for the post office to put in more mail.
How do I keep my mailbox below quota?
If you use an email program, such as Outlook Express or Netscape
Messenger:
Download all email from the VailNet / ColoradoNet server to your
PC.
If you use IMAP
(Some Web based mail program), watch the size of
messages you receive. Consult your email program help if you are
not able to see the size of your messages.
Remove messages with large attachments
by saving them to your computer's
hard drive, or by deleting them.
Do not leave a copy of the messages on the server.
This option is available on most email programs. Select your email
program below for instructions for disabling this option.

check your email program for an option to remove messages after
X amount of days or to remove messages from the server when you
