Protecting
Your Computer
In
a sense, logging onto the Internet is the same as getting into your
car and being able to drive anywhere and do anything. Remember when
you first got your drivers license? The Internet can give you that
same sense of freedom and access to the world, much as you might
have felt the first time you were able to drive a car on your own.
But,
while you are connected to the Internet it may also be possible
for other computers and individuals on the Internet to gain access
to you! Sticking with our "car" analogy, when you take
your car out of the garage and drive it onto the highway, others
can certainly see you and your car (at least in a general sense).
While this is nothing to be concerned about, it is important that
you take the same types of precautions on the Internet that you
would with your car when you're out and about. Before you leave
your garage you want to make sure you buckle-up your seatbelt. When
you park your car and leave it you want to make sure you lock all
your doors and roll up your windows. You also want to make sure
that you lock all your doors and windows at home when you do go
out. It's just basic common sense.
You
should do the same thing with your computer when you "drive"
onto the Internet. VailNet has provided the links below, organized
by operating system type, in an effort to help our customers understand
how to take these same types of precautions while on the Internet.
If you know which operating system you are using on your computer,
click on the appropraite link below. You can also determine which
operating system you are using by clicking your mouse on the "Start"
button on your desktop. The popup which appears will show the Windows
version (eg: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional...)
