Protecting Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows CE Computers

VailNet Suggests that all of our Customers running Windows 95 take the following precautions to secure their computer systems while on the Internet:

Download and Install Anti-Virus Software

Visit ONE of the sites (or any other anti-virus product site) below - you only need one package running on your computer. Be sure and purchase a subscription to their update service so your computer will stay aware of new viruses as they are identified on the Internet (usually this costs around $40/year...)

This type of software acts as a "doorman" between your computer and the Internet, scanning all inbound emails and web downloads of files for lists of known viruses. Prevents you from inadvertantly opening many files (emails or others) which might infect your computer and turn you and your machine into a "infecting agent".

WE STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT EVERYONE DO THIS!!!

Turn off File Sharing
  • Goto Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network
  • Click on "File and Print Sharing"
  • Uncheck any boxes allowing File Sharing
  • Reboot your computer
Prevent third parties from gaining access to your computer's files while you are on the Internet. Some Microsoft "factory" settings allow this "out of the box".
Upgrade Internet Explorer
  • Visit Microsoft's Review of the NIMDA virus and upgrade your Internet Explorer to a version to version 5.5 or higher (you can see which version you have by running Internet Explorer and clicking on "Help->About Internet Explorer" - the version number is just under the logo in the middle of the screen. Various links for this are under the "Email" section of this web site.
Microsoft has issued what amounts to a "factory recall" on Microsoft Internet Explorer. The upgrade patches a hole which might cause your computer to become infected with a virus if you view certain web sites.
Upgrade Outlook Express
  • Visit Microsoft's Review of the NIMDA virus and upgrade your Internet Explorer to a version to version 5.5 or higher (you can see which version you have by running Internet Explorer and clicking on "Help->About Internet Explorer" - the version number is just under the logo in the middle of the screen.
